Slater Park

The sign is obviously new but I'm betting many of us Saints have lots of memories tied to this place. For
myself, I have memories that include being a preteen and riding my bike to the ten mile river within the park, the carrousel (grabbing the slug), and, of course, the submarine races after Saints dances. Much later my father delighted in taking my kids to the park to see Fannie the elephant. What do you remember?

Many nice memories of Slater Park, John. The pond with the ducks and the bandstand were gracefully laid out. We did a lot of skating and hockey playing there in the winter. Slater was the home venue for Saints cross country team. Running 2.3 miles then was considered to be an impressive athletic feat. Did you ever catch "hornpout" in the 10 mile river? Have you ever heard of hornpout outside of Pawtucket? They were nasty little buggers that would cut you with razor gills if you didn't hold them right. Then, if you got lucky at the Saturday night dances and had a car, there were the Saturday night visits to the Slater Park drive along the river. Maybe after stopping at Ratteys. Yes, very good memories.

John,
If I'm remembering the location of that sign correctly, Jeff Hanley's house was directly behind those trees and mine was to the right on the next block.
Also on the lot to the right of the sign was where Tom Harding , Bill Murray (?) , Peter McCrea (?) and I started a grass fire using my new magnifying glass one summer day pre-Saints . Of course everyone else ran and I had to run over to the Newport Ave. fire station to get the firemen to put out the fire.
I don't think my father was mayor at the time, so the news of the juvenile delinquents didn't get to him thankfully! 😱

Bernie,
Yes, I did do some fishing in the Ten Mile river and a nearby pond. We caught lots of hornpout, sometimes ar night. You are right about the name “hornpout” being unknown outside of Pawtucket. I’ve since caught River Cats on the Patomac and they were equally feisty but way bigger.
Mike, it was your magnifying glass. Of course you had to be the guy to get the firemen. lol

I recall being in the park one night with some of the guy (maybe Ted Mitchell and others). We had beer in our pockets and someone mistakenly jumped into the pond. We were all about retrieving the lost beer. lol

I fished the Ten Mile River also for Catfish and eels. The thing I found best was wehen I was a teen with my own car and the Submarine races. Whoopi!!
